How to Care For Your African American or Biracial Baby's Hair

!±8± How to Care For Your African American or Biracial Baby's Hair

If you're baby is African American, one thing that needs to be understood is that your baby needs moisture in her hair. Unlike Caucasian hair or Hispanic hair, African American hair tends to be very dry and will break off unless properly moisturized and taken care of.

Washing Your Baby's Hair
With your baby, the main goal to keeping your baby's hair healthy is moisture. With that being said, you should only wash their hair once or twice a week when they are young, because this should be all the baths they have unless they are crawling. When you bathe them, you should use a shampoo and body wash that is relatively lightly fragranced and gentle on the skin. I recommend Aveeno products because they work great, especially for baby eczema. Once you start bathing your baby daily, still keep washing their hair to a minimum, unless it absolutely needs it. If your baby is biracial, you should adjust the number of times because biracial hair sometimes gets greasy if not washed daily.

After that, you'll want to put in some sort of moisturizer to keep the moisture in. With adults, many tend to use different types of grease and/or lotions to help keep their hair from getting dry and damaged. I, myself, use Pink Lotion in my hair because it is lightweight enough to keep it bouncy, and it moisturizes it just enough as well. With babies and toddlers, however, I don't recommend using these products just for the simple reason that you don't know what all is used in these products. Babies, especially newborns, have very sensitive skin and so you'll want to know exactly what is going into their hair in case there is an allergic reaction to it and what not. So what can you use?

Baby Oil Gel
I completely recommend using baby oil, or mineral oil in your baby's hair until they are at least 2 years old because it's a great moisturizer and is natural, aside from some light fragrance. Using just the oil itself can be messy, but if you buy the baby oil gel, you can get the same results without all the mess. I use it on my daughter every day to keep you hair moisturized. This is also effective if your baby has cradle cap. What you'll want to do is take about a dime to nickel sized amount and rub into your hands before distributing throughout your baby's hair. Any more than this and it will make their head greasy.

This is basically all you need for your baby's hair to be healthy and grow. Keep styling to a minimum other than the use of rubberbands and things until your baby gets older and the soft spot is gone.
